Home page | Shoals This Week Killen’s Block Party Published: 08-19-2009 Annual Founders Event Covers Two Days KILLEN – The annual Killen Founder’s Day celebration will be August 21-22. The Killen Founder’s Day Parade will kick off the weekend, running along J.C. Mauldin Highway from Brooks Elementary to the Foodland Marketplace beginning at 6pm on Friday. Opening ceremonies will be at Killen Park on Friday at 7:30pm with musical entertainment following. Highlights in Saturday include a community yard sale in Killen Park from 7-10am. (Contact Sandra Mitchell at 757-3141 to participate.) The traditional Killen Founder’s Day Run is at 7am at the Killen United Methodist Church. For more information, please contact Joe Quillen at 757-6845. The Car Show will be held at Brooks High School at 8am. For more information, please contact Tom Ayers at 757-9183. The Killen Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual auction in Killen Park on Saturday, August 22 from 9am-noon in honor of Pam McCrory. New to Founder’s Day this year is a pie eating contest at 10am and a Fashion Show at 3pm. There will be a watermelon seed spitting contest at 11am, a singles horseshoe tournament at 3pm and a doubles horse-shoe tournament at 4pm. You can sign up for these activities at Killen Park on Saturday. There will be a Political Rally in the park at 1pm. For more information, please contact Connie Walden, 757-9581. There will be plenty of food, arts and crafts, and activities for the kids, a large number of arts and crafts vendors and wonderful music in the park on both Friday and Saturday nights. The big fireworks finale will be at Killen Park on Saturday at 10pm.
