Lindsey was honored by the community at two locations last week for his service to our nation. Cpl. James "Jamie" Tyler Lindsey, 20, was killed in action outside Baghdad, Iraq in April of 2007. The Bradshaw High School graduate was a forward observer with the U.S. Army's Third Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Fourth Brigade Combat Team (Airborne) 25th Infantry Division out of Fort Richardson, Alaska. Lindsey was driving a Humvee while on patrol, and was killed when his vehicle struck a roadside bomb. Over 300 people attended the Veteran’s Day unveiling of a highway marker on Cox Creek Parkway in Florence. The entire stretch of Cox Creek Parkway from Savannah Hwy. (AL 20) to Florence Blvd. was named the “Cpl. James Tyler Lindsay Memorial Highway.” On Friday, November 13 at an eastern entryway to Underwood Baptist Church, a Memorial Meditation Garden constructed by Corey Donaldson was dedicated to Cpl. Lindsey. Lindsey attended Underwood Baptist when he lived in Florence. Donaldson is a Life Scout with Troop 284 at Chisholm Hills Church of Christ in Florence and was Lindsey's former neighbor. Now a junior at Austin High School in Decatur, Donaldson said the project took about three weekends to construct and involved help from many local people and businesses. He made a point to recognize the Rogers Group, state senator Roger Bedford, Murphy Bros. Nursury, Joe Keenum Construction, and Lambert-Ezell-Durham Architects for their assistance with the memorial garden. Florence Deputy Police Chief Neal Rhodes spoke briefly at the dedication and commented on the leadership and selflessness exhibited by Cpl. Lindsey at a young age. He noted that Lindsey eagerly assisted the Donaldson family years ago by mowing their yard while Cory’s father was serving in Iraq with his National Guard Unit. Cpl. Lindsey and his widow, Michelle, had lived in Alaska for six months before Jamie was deployed to Iraq. Lindsey was laid to rest in Fort Richardson where Michelle still resides. Home page | News |
