Sorority is Strong in the Shoals

SHOALS – Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc is an association for registered professional nurses and student nurses. More than 8,000 registered nurses and student nurses hold membership in the sorority. There are over 81 graduate chapters and 39 undergraduate chapters located in 26 states, the District of Columbia, the US Virgin Islands, and Liberia, West Africa. Membership is by invitation and is both active and honorary.
Chartered in 1994, the local chapter (Kappa Phi) of Chi Eta Phi is active in health promotion and maintenance and health education. Activities include participation in local health fairs, seminars, and other health-related functions. One of Kappa Phi’s annual service projects is to provide a first aid booth at the annual African-American Heritage Festival held in June in Tuscumbia.
Another annual service project is to provide scholarships for nursing students. Kappa Phi awards an annual academic scholarship and an emergency funds scholarship on an as needed basis.
The group met recently at Demos’ Restaurant as shown in the photo on page one. Chapter basileus (president) is Nina Pride of Cherokee. Other members include Siglee Abernathy, Ethel Bridges, Dr. Alyce Brown, Waynett Boyd, Sheila Felton, Gail Mullens, Dr. Teresa Leonard, Alma Pearsall and Rochelle Vinson.
