Editor Named for History

MUSCLE SHOALS–Dr. Leigh Ann Wilson has been selected as editor of the next volume of the Journal of Muscle Shoals History, a scholarly publication of the Tennessee Valley Historical Society.

Dr. Wilson is a native of Florence who graduated from Bradshaw High and UNA with a degree in journalism. She earned her master’s degree from Kansas State University in mass communication with an emphasis in media law. She then began teaching English as a second language, which she continues to do on a volunteer basis.

In 2011 she completed her doctor of philosophy degree (Ph.D.) at the University of Memphis in 20th century United States history with emphasis on immigration, race, ethnicity, and Latin America.

Currently, Wilson teaches History of Childhood and Surveys of United States History online for the University of Memphis. She also teaches online history classes in U. S. immigration, the Holocaust, and Globalism and Sustainability for Buena Vista University, Storm Lake, Iowa.

Wilson is the daughter of Jerry and Jimmie Lou Wilson of Florence and the mother of two sons, Matthew and Andrew. She resides in Raleigh, NC.

Wilson said the upcoming volume will deal with national politics in the Shoals area, especially events and people of the 1930s. Some of the articles will discuss visits to Northwest Alabama by future, current, and past Presidents with emphasis on Franklin D. Roosevelt’s two visits, the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Great Depression, Senator George Norris, Representative Ed Almon, editorials of the Florence Times/Tri-Cities Daily, the 1936 Presidential election, and the Tennessee Valley Authority. The new publication should be off the press by late fall.

The most recent edition of the Journal, subtitled SHEFFIELD HISTORY AND RECOLLECTIONS, is almost sold out. It was compiled and edited by Richard Sheridan of Sheffield. A second printing is planned. Anyone who failed to get a copy can reserve one by calling Sheridan at 256- 381-2298.
