Life is not stationary. We are either progressing or regressing, whether we choose to accept it or not. I am reminded of this at different times in life. Sometimes it comes to mind at moments when I realize how grown up my kids are getting. Other times I’m reminded on the occasion of someone’s passing away. There are so many clichés and quotes about seizing the day and living life to the fullest, and they’re all true. I think we all know that they’re true, too. We just have to make sure we remind ourselves often. Sometimes I hear people say that they wish they had (insert life goal here). What some of them don’t realize is, they can! Goals are not only for the young. Goals are for life.
There are so many inspiring examples of later-in-life success, but here are a few of my favorites. The golden arches, Mickey D’s, home of the Happy Meal and billions and billions served? Ray Kroc, founder of McDonald’s, had passed his 50th birthday before he founded the company. You can love Walmart or hate it, or hate to love it, but no one can deny the success of the company. Sam Walton did not open the first Wal-Mart store until he was 44. Julia Child didn’t write her first cookbook until she was 50. Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the Little House books which spawned the beloved television show Little House on the Prairie, published her first book at age 65.
Those are some examples of amazing success, but success can be just as fulfilling on a much smaller scale. Even things which bring no monetary gain can be incredibly rewarding personally. Sometimes these things are referred to as a “bucket list”. What things are on your list? Things you’d love to accomplish before your time on Earth is over? I’ll bet some of them are small enough to get started on right now. And the big ones—the ones that seem almost unattainable? Those big goals are not out of reach, they just might need to be built upon some smaller, short-term goals. The key is to make those goals. Big and small. Write them down and don’t let them get lost in the shuffle of everyday life. In fact, build them into that everyday life and don’t give up. Not while you have breath to breathe, because you have a life to live. Live it to the fullest.
