(I have run this article before but I believe that it is very appropriate based on our present situation. These 3 points strengthen the argument that we as a country need to be more self reliant. We cannot depend on the rest of the world to protect our citizens.)

Several years ago, I heard Ray Koopman of Navistar speak to a group of REALTORS.

I will paraphrase the things that Mr. Koopman said because I did not write them word for word, and because I want to add a little of my own commentary.

A country is made strong and stays strong by these three things:

1. MINING – Every strong country must learn to take from the earth its own natural resources. We cannot be dependent on others to supply these most basic of needs. We must realize the freedom that is ours when we depend on self and not others. We have a great storehouse of wealth resting beneath our soil – Coal, Oil, Natural Gas, etc. and every day we trade our wealth to others to buy that which we already possess.

2. AGRICULTURE – A strong country feeds itself. When others have to feed us, we are placed in the position of a child – ever dependent on another and forced to eat what is placed before us. A strong country sits at the grown-up table and not the kid’s table. I have no doubt that we could bountifully feed ourselves, and most of the world, if we took advantage of the fertile soil beneath our feet.

3. MANUFACTURING – A strong country makes what it uses. Strong countries manufacture where they sell. If we are to provide our citizens with the means to buy goods – we must provide them with the jobs to make a living. These jobs provide the income that feeds the consumption machine, thus creating the need for more production of more goods. This is the natural law of supply and demand - so simple.

Can’t you think of at least one hundred reasons why this makes good sense!? Our country can only become stronger as we apply these principles. We live in a nation with every one of the necessary elements to continue to become stronger and more prosperous. We are indeed blessed to be citizens of The United States of America.
