Have you ever heard of a Love Lock Bridge? All over the world there are bridges where lovers take a lock, write their names on it, and secure it to a bridge. They then throw the key into the water below to signify their lasting love to one another. It sounds like a perfectly innocent expression of love. What could be wrong with two people showing the world how much they care for one another?
Here’s the problem. The trouble is that a small deed that they thought was no big deal became a huge worry when everyone else started putting their locks on the bridge. The Port des Arts bridge in Paris (the city of love) had thousands upon thousands of locks placed by lovers who thought it was no big deal. Their expression of love was destroying the structural integrity of the bridge.
Over 8 tons of locks a year were being added by folks who thought their little lock wouldn’t hurt anyone. Once a section of the railing tore loose and fell into the water. Also, those thousands of keys thrown into the river below were rusting and adding pollution to the water. These well-intentioned, loving small deeds were having large, dangerous consequences.
Don’t we see this around us every day. There are people who think that their little deeds are not going to hurt anyone. They may even have what they believe to be pure, loving motives for what they are doing. However, if everyone did what they wanted for their own reasons – it will soon add up to a weight that will threaten the structural integrity of our families, our communities, our state, our nation and even the world.
Wait. Isn’t that really what is happening right now? Aren’t we living in a world where people are doing what they perceive to be “Right in their own eyes”? The bridge that once linked us all together is failing. It is time to wake up and get out the bolt cutters. We need to care more about the bridge than we do about our own lock we are hanging on the bridge.
The answer to our problems still rests in the command to “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you”.
