I remember several years ago seeing an ad for a fur coat with the following description: “Genuine Imitation Fur”. Can you imagine a sillier way to advertise? Did they think that using the word genuine in the ad would improve the reader’s opinion of the coat? It seems to me that they were shouting from the rooftop that this is a REAL FAKE FUR. Genuine is a word that is best used when describing those things that are truly true.

What about the genuine qualities of a friend? A few weeks ago, I heard these three points used to describe an encouraging friend. I want to share them with you and build on each thought.

A Genuine Friend Is Someone Who Helps Us Lighten Up. The world has plenty of sorrow, stress and burdens in it. We need friends who will lighten the load by helping us to find something to smile about. There are certain people in my life that I can always count on to provide me with a chuckle and at times a belly laugh or two. I am thankful that they walk on the sunny side of the street. We need them and we need to be more like them. I have the alarm on my phone set to alarm every day at 12:34 p.m. I use the 1234 to remind me to count my blessings. When that alarm sounds, I pause and think about how blessed I am. I’m telling you that there have been days when that alarm was a much-needed reality check. Sometimes we just need to be nudged by a friend and reminded to count our blessings. Thanks friend, for your ability to lighten my load and help me lighten up.

A Genuine Friend Is Someone Who Listens Up. This world is a noisy place. There seem to be a thousand different ways to communicate with one another and yet very few of us are good listeners. Most of us are spending our time in a conversation thinking of what we are going to say next. I am thankful for genuine listeners. Good listening doesn’t mean that we always agree with what others are saying, but it means that we care about the speaker. Listen to what someone says. Repeat their words back to them to show you are listening. Say something like, “So what I hear you saying is…” and you will be astounded at how special you help another person feel. Thanks friend, for your ability to lend me your ear.

A Genuine Friend Is Someone Who Lifts Us Up. Most of us could use a boost from time to time. Think about the person(s) in your life that helped you believe in yourself. What a wonderful thing it is to have someone in your corner urging you to “give it a try”. Think about those dreamers in your life that helped you do more and be more than you thought you could. These kinds of genuine friends should be a source of inspiration for us to do the same for others. They left us with a debt of gratitude that is best paid forward. Thanks friend, for your ability to lift me up.

Friends who Lighten Up, Listen Up and Lift Up – Now that’s the Genuine Article. Go be one.
