First and foremost, there is only one race-the human race. In Genesis, the Bible tells us God

created the first man Adam from the dust. From a portion of Adam’s side, God made the first woman Eve. Every human being who has ever lived is descended from this first human couple.  Acts 17:26 reiterates this truth- “And (God) hath made of one blood all nations of men…”

Records in Genesis Ch. 3 how the sin of Adam brought the curse of sin and death upon all of humanity. In less than 2000 years, humanity in general became so corrupt that God destroyed all people in a worldwide flood. Only eight people were spared- Noah, his wife, their sons (Shem, Ham and Japheth), and their wives. From these sons of Noah, the earth was again populated and all the people groups of the world were formed. There was/is still only one race-the human race.

The concept of different human races is really a product of evolutionary thinking. The publication of the Origin of Species by Charles Darwin in 1859 did not create the evil of racism, but it did add fuel to the fire. Those who viewed some people groups as superior to others (as well as those who supported the practice of human slavery) latched on to Darwin’s ideas. They falsely postulated that some races of people were more highly evolved than others and thus were more highly advanced and valuable.

These false ideas based on evolutionary theory also led to the rise of eugenics-the idea that humanity could be improved by genetic selection. One American who embraced this idea of improving humanity through eugenics and population control was Margaret Sanger. She founded what is now Planned Parenthood. One of her racist goals was to eliminate people of color. This type of thinking was taken to the extreme by Hitler with his obsession with producing the “master race” through the selective breeding of humans.

Racism is a sin issue, not a skin issue.  Sin, if not kept in check by adherence to God’s moral law and the grace of God as revealed in His Son Jesus Christ, gives rise to all sorts of evil - murder, theft, immorality, and hatred of others who are different, which is the essence of racism.

There is only one race-the human race. We were originally created in the image of God, but this image has been corrupted by sin. The first step to racial reconciliation is to experience peace with God through faith in Christ.  Then we must pursue peace with our fellows by dying to self-centered pride and seeking to live humbly in service to God and all members of the human family.
