Mr. Editor:

Bernie Sanders is an independent US Senator from Vermont and a democratic candidate for President of the United States. Sanders recently spoke at historically black Benedict College located in Columbia, South Carolina.

Candidate Sanders made a comment that I do not agree with. The candidate has the right to make that comment because the Constitution of the United States guarantees freedom of speech. I have that same right!

Candidate Sanders recommended to young black Americans, “I would respect what they are doing so that you don’t get shot in the back of the head.” With this comment the candidate appears to take a verbal shot at all police officers. In my opinion, ‘a shot in the back of the head’ would be one at close range.

I do not believe Sanders’ comment should be directed at the Florence City Police Department. Our city is fortunate to have the men and women who serve in our police department.
