SHOALS – The 2021 Shoals Kidney Walk of Champions is special to the Anderson family.   The family matriarch, Hilda B. Anderson, was very familiar with kidney disease, having been on dialysis for several years before passing away last year.

This year’s Shoals area Walk Chair is Terry Anderson, Chairman and CEO of TNT Fireworks, and the second of Hilda’s four sons. The Shoals Walk is Saturday, May 1 from 9:30-11:30am at River Heritage Place in the Marriott-Shoals Conference Center complex in Florence.  This special drive-thru, socially-distanced celebration is In Memoriam of Hilda B. Anderson.

According to Terry Anderson, The Alabama Kidney Foundation is the only state-based organization in Alabama dedicated to improving the quality of life for kidney patients.

“Alabama ranks first in the nation per capita for kidney failure.  More than 14,000 people must undergo weekly, life-saving dialysis treatments,” he said.

Kidney Disease is the ninth leading cause of death in the United States, ranking above breast or prostate cancer. An estimated 400,000 Alabamians live with chronic kidney disease, so its impact is widely felt.

“The preferred treatment for kidney failure is a transplant.  However, the wait time to receive one can be up to seven years,” Anderson added.  “My mother had kidney disease and underwent kidney dialysis for almost six years.  Our family is grateful for the extended years of life given to my mother because of the dialysis treatments.

“Through my mother’s experience, my family learned about the many hardships  and financial burdens dialysis patients and their families encounter.  That is why the mission of the AKF is so dear to me.  The dedication and generosity of my mother in helping communities in need has inspired me to do the same in her memory.  Your involvement and contributions will make an impact on thousands of lives.”

The Alabama Kidney Foundation’s annual Kidney Walks raise funds for Alabama’s kidney patients in need.  Join others at the 2021 drive-thru, socially-distanced Shoals Kidney Walk and show your support!
