SHEFFIELD – Two Northwest-Shoals Community College students are among ten local recipients of the 2021/2022 Edward Fennel Mauldin Endowed Scholarship awarded through Bank Independent. Both students were recognized at a reception held in their honor at the Hospitality Center on the Shoals Campus on October 12 with guests from Bank Independent and NW-SCC.

Freshman students, Lydia Henderson and Jaliyah Jackson, are first-time scholarship recipients.  Henderson, a recent graduate of Tharptown High School, is working towards an associate in science.  Jackson is a recent graduate of Sheffield High School who is pursuing a major in nursing.  The Edward Fennel Mauldin Endowed Scholarship is awarded to qualified, first-generation college students. It is based on financial need and residence within the seven counties served by Bank Independent.

Bank Independent President Macke Mauldin congratulated the students on their achievements.  He explained that his father, the late Edward F. Mauldin, never graduated from college. However, he was a lifelong learner who deeply appreciated the value of the college experience.  Mauldin added that his father believed that any exposure to college was better than none at all.

“The banking business is all about investing in people, whether they are our team members, our customers, our shareholders, or the communities we serve,” said Mauldin.  “We are so pleased to be able to make this investment in you and hope you make the most of your educational journey.  We challenge you to pay it forward through your service to others.”

NW-SCC Interim President Dr. Chris Cox reflected on how this opportunity impacts the college. “I am excited about the future of Northwest-Shoals and what it can do for our community.  We are in the people business too, and I am proud to be part of an education system that helps students statewide find their college opportunity.  Congratulations to Jaliyah and Lydia, and thank you to Bank Independent and the Mauldin family for your commitment to our community.”

There are ten Edward Fennel Mauldin Memorial Endowed Scholarships award each year. There are two endowed scholarships dedicated to serve Northwest-Shoals Community College, six scholarships awarded to University of North Alabama students, and two to students at Athens State University.
