FLORENCE – Harold W. Lewis, a member of the Rotary Club of Florence, began his tenure as Governor of Rotary District 6860 on July 1.
At his June 28 installation ceremony in Florence, District Governor Lewis introduced Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta’s theme for the 2021-2022 Rotary year: “Serve to Change Lives.”
“I realized that is exactly what we have been doing for years,” he said. “Even the pandemic did not slow down some clubs.”
However, he said Rotary has failed to fully promote its successes and value to the greater public. Rotary membership has stayed around 1.2 million worldwide for the past two decades, but membership in the United States declined about 88,000 during the same period.
“Rotary provides the world with hope,” Lewis added. “District 6860 must find new ways to recruit members and ensure clubs continue changing lives in their communities.”
To accomplish this, Lewis has one overarching goal for his year as District Governor: “Market Rotary – Make it SHINE!”
“Make sure your successes get noted,” he said. “Promote your successes whenever possible, in every media form.”
Lewis said there are people who want to serve their communities, but may not know about Rotary. Clubs can show future members their destinies as Rotarians by publicizing club projects, promoting members’ accomplishments, and sharing Rotary’s values.
“In doing so,” he said, “we will continue to ‘Serve to Change Lives.’”
