Touch Creators Visit Keller’s Birthplace

TUSCUMBIA – Opera Birmingham is excited to announce the commission of a new opera, Touch, based on the lives of Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan.  The world premiere is scheduled for Birmingham in January 2024.  

The the composer and co-librettist of Touch, Carla Lucero, from Napa, CA and co-librettist, Marianna Mott Newirth, from New York City, were in Birmingham recently where they were previewing the opera as part of Red Mountain Theatre’s Human Rights New Works Festival.

While in Alabama, the two also visited Tuscumbia and toured the Helen Keller Home (Ivy Green).
