FLORENCE- The 7th Burrell-Slater Athletic Hall of Fame Induction banquet took place February 7 in the old Burrell Slater gym in Florence to congratulate this year’s Burrell Slater HOF inductees. The featured honorees were Sam Barnett, Dave Smith, and the 1967 champion men’s basketball team.
Special recognition was given to Samuel L. Brewer and Will Liner, Jr. as distinguished contributors to the Burrell-Slater legacy. The combined contributions of these gentlemen spans decades. They persevered through segregation and discrimination in all aspects of their years in school and went on to stand out as productive, well respected citizens in the area. Their phenomenal efforts to tell the stories and highlight the history of this beloved African-American high school have resulted in organized events that attract many old timers and history buffs. The strong leadership of Brewer and Liner in Burrell-Slater Athletic Hall of Fame, Burrell School Reunion, and community activities has been inspirational.
The prowess of football quarterback Sam Barnett and the basketball shots of Dave Smith as well as the 1966-67 basketball team–one of the several teams to win a championship were remembered.
The Burrell Slater 1967 basketball team lost only two games that year, their first and last games - by 1 point each.
The team was coached by Harvest Mitchell Team members included:
