FLORENCE – October is Renaissance Faire month in Florence and several contest deadlines associated with the October 26 and 27 Faire are approaching.

ART CONTEST

The Alabama Renaissance Faire’s Annual Art Contest for is open to all children from Kindergarten-6th grade. Young people throughout the state of Alabama are eligible to enter. All local schools have received the announcement.

Entries may be done in any medium: pen and ink, watercolor, acrylics, etc. No three-dimensional entries are (sculpture, models, etc.) accepted. Entries must be related to the Medieval or Renaissance theme such as castles, knights, princes/princesses, dragons, copies of Old Masters of the eras, etc.

Entries must be submitted to the office of Billy Warren, City-County Government Building, 102 South Court Street, Second Floor, Florence, AL 35630. Deadline for submission is Monday, October 7 at 4pm.

SONNET-WRITING

The Annual Sonnet-Writing Contest sponsored by the Alabama Renaissance Faire is now officially underway. All students currently in grades 7-12 are eligible to enter.

The sonnet as a literary form originated with the Italian poet, Petrarch, during the historical period known as the Renaissance in Europe. William Shakespeare developed an alternate version to be known as the English or Shakespearean sonnet thereafter.

All entries must consist of exactly 14 lines and must have an established rhyme pattern utilizing the Italian or English style or a pattern of the student’s own creation.

Entries must be submitted to the office of Billy Warren at the City-County Government Building, 102 South Court Street, Second Floor, Florence, AL 35630. Deadline for submission is 4pm on Monday, October 7.

CHESS PLAYOFF

All area public and private schools have been notified of th Annual Chess Playoff to take place at the Alabama Renaissance Faire on Saturday, October 26 at 10am.

Tournaments are encouraged in each school for students in grades K-12 ahead of the playoff on October 26.

An Open Division will be staged at the playoff as well. Any student in grades K-12 not affiliated with a public or private school (or whose school does not have a tournament) is free to enter by simply showing up at the Alabama Renaissance Faire at 10am on the day of the playoff.
