ATHENS – Cowboys, cowgirls, rodeo clowns, bulls and horses will be in Athens next weekend for some family-friendly rodeo action. Billed as the greatest show on dirt, the 38th Annual Limestone Sheriff’s Rodeo is set for August 21-22. Tickets are available online and attendees are encouraged to purchase in advance.
Considered the largest outdoor rodeo east of the Mississippi, the Limestone Sheriff’s Rodeo gets underway both nights at 8pm with gates opening at 6pm. Competitive events lined up for both nights include bareback bronc riding, calf roping, break-away roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, kids calf scramble, cowgirl’s barrel racing and bull riding. As cowboys and cowgirls compete for prize money, the crowd is also entertained with professional rodeo clowns, chuck wagon races and other performers.
Daily ticket prices are adults $15 in advance or $17 at the gate and children 12 years and under $10 in advance or $12 at the gate. On Friday night only there is free admission for one child per family with a paying adult. Tickets may be purchased in advance at Limestone County Sheriff’s office, Preston’s Western Wear, and online at www.limestonesheriffrodeo.com. The availability of tickets for both nights has been reduced to help with social distancing and the COVID-19 public health orders.
A slack competition for team roping contestants is scheduled for Thursday, August 20. Gates open at 6pm and admission is $5 per person.
