FLORENCE – The Florence Indian Mound Museum is seeking volunteers for the Shoals Chapter of the Thousand Eyes Program. The program trains volunteers to assist archaeologists by helping to monitor archaeological sites in the Shoals for looting and vandalism. Thousands of Native American objects are stolen from burial sites around the Shoals each year.
Volunteers are assigned a site that they look over and monitor, often requiring hiking, boating, or kayaking. Volunteers will take part in a two-day training and will have the opportunity to become members of the Shoals Archaeological Stewardship Association, an organization that works to promote awareness of endangered cultural resources, collaboration with Native American tribes, and education regarding archaeology throughout the Shoals. The program is sponsored by the city of Florence Department of Arts and Museums.
Anyone interested in taking part should email email@example.com or call 256-760-6427 to request an application.
The Florence Indian Mound Museum is located at 1028 S. Court St. in Florence. It is open Tuesday - Saturday from 10am-4pm and Sundays from 1-4pm.
